JAPAN / THE DNL CITY GUIDE

Tokyo.

An endlessly interesting city made manageable by one good neighbourhood. Tokyo suits a city-first working trip: choose a useful station, a room you can comfortably work from and a reliable desk for the days that need one.

Build your own stay budget +

Start with the reference prices, then change the assumptions to match your trip. Inputs are in JPY; totals use your display currency.

Room starts at long-let rent ÷ 30 + a 35% DNL short-stay allowance, not a researched hotel rate. Replace it with your quote. Travel starts with the reported pass, or 44 single trips where no pass is available. Add a realistic desk and extras allowance to complete the model.

What about a night out?

One mid-range dinner share + two local draught beers comes to about £19.84. This is a calculated example, not a nightlife average; add taxis, club entry and premium drinks separately.

03 / ARRIVE, THEN GET YOUR BEARINGS

Getting around, without the guesswork.

Transport information ↗

From the airport

For Narita, compare Narita Express with the Keisei Skyliner via Nippori / Ueno. From Haneda, compare Keikyu via Shinagawa with Tokyo Monorail via Hamamatsucho. Choose by your final neighbourhood and check current services.

Your everyday commute

Use rail for cross-city trips and walk within a neighbourhood. Check the last train before an evening out.

Tickets & payment

Suica / PASMO can simplify local travel where supported. A tourist rail pass is not automatically good value for an ordinary Tokyo working week.

The local shortcut

Choose the exact station and exit before booking. A quiet café is not automatically permission for a full laptop day or a video call.

06 / THE THINGS THAT MAKE A WEEK WORK

Settle in. Keep the good bits.

Stay connected

Compare visitor SIM/eSIM options for your device. Confirm whether your stay has a desk, chair and enough room to work comfortably.

Connectivity toolkit ↗

Eat like you live here

Set lunches and casual restaurants can keep food costs manageable. Soy sauce, noodles and broths require careful allergy questions.

For allergies, carry a translated dietary card and ask about ingredients and cross-contact.

Pick your season

Spring and autumn often suit a walking-heavy trip. Summer can be intensely hot and humid; early summer brings rain, with storm disruption possible later in the season. Winter needs warmer layers.

Build your backup

Confirm medical cover for the work and activities you plan. Save local emergency contacts, a nearby clinic and a backup desk before your first working day.

How the nomad ratings work

DNL editorial assessments, not visitor averages or Jake’s personal reviews. Each category uses a 1–5 scale (limited to strong): work setup considers the sourced workspace options; getting around considers the usefulness of transit and walking; everyday value considers the researched cost context; days off considers the range of things to explore. The overall score is the equally weighted mean, rounded to one decimal. These are subjective starting points, not measured Wi-Fi, safety or visa scores.
