FRANCE / THE DNL CITY GUIDE

Paris.

Choose an arrondissement, a desk and a regular lunch spot, then explore beyond the landmarks. A short metro journey can matter more to your week than being next to a famous sight.

Build your own stay budget +

Start with the reference prices, then change the assumptions to match your trip. Inputs are in EUR; totals use your display currency.

Room starts at long-let rent ÷ 30 + a 35% DNL short-stay allowance, not a researched hotel rate. Replace it with your quote. Travel starts with the reported pass, or 44 single trips where no pass is available. Add a realistic desk and extras allowance to complete the model.

What about a night out?

One mid-range dinner share + two local draught beers comes to about £40.92. This is a calculated example, not a nightlife average; add taxis, club entry and premium drinks separately.

Getting around, without the guesswork.

Transport information ↗

Match the airport ticket

CDG, Orly and Beauvais require different routes. For CDG or Orly rail journeys, check the Paris Region <> Airports ticket and the specific terminal connection.

Métro for a regular commute

Choose accommodation around the line that serves your workspace. A direct trip is often simpler than being centrally located with several changes.

Phone or Navigo Easy

Current Île-de-France products can be loaded on a compatible phone or Navigo Easy pass. Airport rail, métro/train and bus/tram products have different validity rules.

Keep a local routine

Walk between nearby neighbourhoods when possible, and check the last métro for late evenings. A building without a lift may be awkward with heavy luggage.

ROUTE TO INVESTIGATE

Entrepreneur / profession libérale route where eligible

France provides a long-stay route for eligible self-employed professional activity, with evidence of a viable activity and sufficient resources. Your nationality and actual work determine the appropriate permission.

Do not assume a tourism or visitor visa permits your particular remote work. The self-employed route is not a universal digital nomad permission.

Official requirements & application ↗
  1. 01

Use the official France-Visas wizard with your nationality, residence country, intended activity and length of stay.

  2. 02

For self-employed activity, review the professional qualifications, project viability, resources and supporting documents listed for your case.

  3. 03

Apply through the official visa process and complete any required validation or residence formalities after arrival. Confirm the position for an overseas salaried role separately.

Checked 3 Nov 2026. Eligibility depends on nationality, residence and work arrangements. Check the competent authority before applying; permission to enter, work and become tax resident are separate questions.

CLOSE THE LAPTOP

Make room for the place itself.

06 / THE THINGS THAT MAKE A WEEK WORK

Settle in. Keep the good bits.

Stay connected

Compare French prepaid or eSIM plans and EU roaming terms. Ask for an upload-speed test, a desk photo and whether calls are allowed in the shared work area.

Connectivity toolkit ↗

Eat like you live here

Bouillons offer traditional meals with visible menus. Bakeries, grocery shops and weekday set lunches help balance higher-cost dinners; check laptop etiquette before settling into a small café.

For allergies, carry a translated dietary card and ask about ingredients and cross-contact.

Pick your season

Summer and major events can raise demand for rooms; some independent businesses take August holidays. Winter means shorter days and more indoor plans.

Build your backup

Confirm medical cover for the work and activities you plan. Save local emergency contacts, a nearby clinic and a backup desk before your first working day.

How the nomad ratings work

DNL editorial assessments, not visitor averages or Jake’s personal reviews. Each category uses a 1–5 scale (limited to strong): work setup considers the sourced workspace options; getting around considers the usefulness of transit and walking; everyday value considers the researched cost context; days off considers the range of things to explore. The overall score is the equally weighted mean, rounded to one decimal. These are subjective starting points, not measured Wi-Fi, safety or visa scores.
