Build your own stay budget +

Start with the reference prices, then change the assumptions to match your trip. Inputs are in CAD; totals use your display currency.

Room starts at long-let rent ÷ 30 + a 35% DNL short-stay allowance, not a researched hotel rate. Replace it with your quote. Travel starts with the reported pass, or 44 single trips where no pass is available. Add a realistic desk and extras allowance to complete the model.

What about a night out?

One mid-range dinner share + two local draught beers comes to about £36.80. This is a calculated example, not a nightlife average; add taxis, club entry and premium drinks separately.

Neighbourhood suggestions are editorial. Check the exact street, building and commute before committing to a long stay.

03 / ARRIVE, THEN GET YOUR BEARINGS

Getting around, without the guesswork.

Transport information ↗

YUL arrival

STM’s 747 airport bus links YUL and the city. It has specific fare rules: buy a valid airport product and check whether your chosen pass includes the journey.

Métro for longer trips

Base near a useful métro line if you will commute regularly. Buses connect neighbourhoods beyond the nearest station; check weekend works before a tight appointment.

Choose the right zone

STM fare products and OPUS options depend on zone and usage. A central Montréal trip and a journey into a neighbouring city may need different products.

A seasonal commute

Summer cycling and walking are appealing; snow and ice change the plan. Check building access, heating and the winter journey to your workspace.

ROUTE TO INVESTIGATE

Visitor status for qualifying overseas remote work

Canada identifies digital nomads working remotely for a foreign employer as visitors rather than holders of a dedicated nomad visa. The permitted period and entry requirements depend on your individual admission.

The government describes up to six months for qualifying foreign-employer remote work; the actual authorised stay can differ. Canadian work and tax questions require a separate check.

Indicative stay

Official requirements & application ↗
  1. 01

Check IRCC nationality-based visitor visa or eTA requirements before travelling; approval to travel does not guarantee admission.

  2. 02

Prepare evidence of the overseas employer, source of income, funds, accommodation and intended visit. Confirm how the rules apply if self-employed or serving multiple clients.

  3. 03

Respect the period authorised on entry. Check IRCC requirements before extending a stay or beginning work connected to the Canadian labour market.

Checked 3 Nov 2026. Eligibility depends on nationality, residence and work arrangements. Check the competent authority before applying; permission to enter, work and become tax resident are separate questions.

CLOSE THE LAPTOP

Make room for the place itself.

06 / THE THINGS THAT MAKE A WEEK WORK

Settle in. Keep the good bits.

Stay connected

Compare prepaid mobile plans and hotspot allowances. Ask about winter heating, a dedicated work table and the router’s location; avoid assuming a café is suitable for private calls.

Connectivity toolkit ↗

Eat like you live here

French menus are common; a friendly bonjour helps. Add applicable sales taxes and tips when budgeting restaurant meals; grocery shopping at public markets offers another routine.

For allergies, carry a translated dietary card and ask about ingredients and cross-contact.

Pick your season

Winter can be very cold and snowy, so prioritize heating, boots and nearby transit. Summer festival periods bring a different pace and stronger demand for rooms.

Build your backup

Confirm medical cover for the work and activities you plan. Save local emergency contacts, a nearby clinic and a backup desk before your first working day.

How the nomad ratings work

DNL editorial assessments, not visitor averages or Jake’s personal reviews. Each category uses a 1–5 scale (limited to strong): work setup considers the sourced workspace options; getting around considers the usefulness of transit and walking; everyday value considers the researched cost context; days off considers the range of things to explore. The overall score is the equally weighted mean, rounded to one decimal. These are subjective starting points, not measured Wi-Fi, safety or visa scores.
