MEXICO / THE DNL CITY GUIDE

Mexico City.

A huge creative city with enough food, art and neighbourhood life for a much longer stay. Start with one manageable home-to-desk area, then use the rest of Mexico City for days when you can put the laptop away.

Build your own stay budget +

Start with the reference prices, then change the assumptions to match your trip. Inputs are in MXN; totals use your display currency.

Room starts at long-let rent ÷ 30 + a 35% DNL short-stay allowance, not a researched hotel rate. Replace it with your quote. Travel starts with the reported pass, or 44 single trips where no pass is available. Add a realistic desk and extras allowance to complete the model.

What about a night out?

One mid-range dinner share + two local draught beers comes to about £23.72. This is a calculated example, not a nightlife average; add taxis, club entry and premium drinks separately.

03 / ARRIVE, THEN GET YOUR BEARINGS

Getting around, without the guesswork.

Transport information ↗

From the airport

Check which airport you use: AICM and AIFA are very different journeys. Use the airport’s current authorised transport instructions rather than assuming app pickup is available.

Your everyday commute

Metro and Metrobús make cross-city trips affordable. Plan walking legs and avoid peak-hour luggage journeys where possible.

Tickets & payment

Check the current Integrated Mobility card and payment arrangements for each service. ECOBICI has its own sign-up and usage conditions.

The local shortcut

Pick accommodation within one neighbourhood of your regular desk. Road traffic can make an apparently short ride unpredictable.

WeWork Mexico City

Several locations; compare the building’s day access, meeting rooms and station access.

Day passes advertised from MXN 717 at Reforma Latino; live price varies.

Visas & staying longer.

ROUTE TO INVESTIGATE

Temporary residence or appropriate entry route

Mexico’s temporary-resident route can involve economic-solvency evidence. It is not a universal digital-nomad visa, and permitted activity needs a separate check.

Do not assume visitor entry grants a fixed maximum stay or authorises your particular work. Use your own entry decision and official advice.

Official requirements & application ↗
  1. 01

Contact the Mexican consulate responsible for your residence and check its current solvency and appointment requirements.

  2. 02

Prepare the financial, passport and other evidence required by that consulate; thresholds and acceptable documents can vary.

  3. 03

If a residence visa is granted, follow the required INM residence-card process after arrival and confirm your work arrangements.

Checked 3 Nov 2026. Eligibility depends on nationality, residence and work arrangements. Check the competent authority before applying; permission to enter, work and become tax resident are separate questions.

CLOSE THE LAPTOP

Make room for the place itself.

Museum afternoon

Choose one museum and check booking requirements, rather than trying to cover the whole city.

06 / THE THINGS THAT MAKE A WEEK WORK

Settle in. Keep the good bits.

Stay connected

Telcel, AT&T and local eSIM options are starting points. Confirm mobile coverage indoors and your building’s water and earthquake procedures.

Connectivity toolkit ↗

Eat like you live here

Combine a neighbourhood comida corrida with occasional market or restaurant meals. Ask about sauces and preparation if you have dietary needs.

For allergies, carry a translated dietary card and ask about ingredients and cross-contact.

Pick your season

The high-altitude city can feel cool in the morning and evening. Rain is more common from late spring into autumn; winter and early spring are generally drier. Check current air-quality conditions.

Build your backup

Confirm medical cover for the work and activities you plan. Save local emergency contacts, a nearby clinic and a backup desk before your first working day.

How the nomad ratings work

DNL editorial assessments, not visitor averages or Jake’s personal reviews. Each category uses a 1–5 scale (limited to strong): work setup considers the sourced workspace options; getting around considers the usefulness of transit and walking; everyday value considers the researched cost context; days off considers the range of things to explore. The overall score is the equally weighted mean, rounded to one decimal. These are subjective starting points, not measured Wi-Fi, safety or visa scores.
