UNITED KINGDOM / THE DNL CITY GUIDE

London.

A neighbourhood-first base with a huge choice of workspaces, food and things to do. Pick your home-to-desk route first: housing costs and long cross-city journeys can shape the whole week.

Build your own stay budget +

Start with the reference prices, then change the assumptions to match your trip. Inputs are in GBP; totals use your display currency.

Room starts at long-let rent ÷ 30 + a 35% DNL short-stay allowance, not a researched hotel rate. Replace it with your quote. Travel starts with the reported pass, or 44 single trips where no pass is available. Add a realistic desk and extras allowance to complete the model.

What about a night out?

One mid-range dinner share + two local draught beers comes to about £54.00. This is a calculated example, not a nightlife average; add taxis, club entry and premium drinks separately.

Getting around, without the guesswork.

Transport information ↗

Choose the right airport route

Heathrow has Elizabeth line and Underground options. Gatwick, Stansted and Luton use different routes and fare systems: route the exact airport to the exact address.

Think in neighbourhoods

Tube and rail cover longer trips; buses and walking connect the final stretch. A home near a direct line often beats a seemingly central address with several changes.

Use one payment device

TfL accepts contactless or Oyster on its network. Use the same card or device for each journey; touch in and out on rail, and touch in only on buses.

Check the last journey

Look up the late-night service for your line before going out. Some routes and days have overnight trains; others need a night bus or booked car.

Visas & staying longer.

ROUTE TO INVESTIGATE

Visitor rules / an appropriate work or residence status

The UK permits overseas employment tasks remotely as a secondary part of a visit. Remote work must not be the main reason for the visit; a visitor stay is not a general permission to base your working life in the UK.

Immigration permission and tax obligations are separate. UK visitor permission does not generally allow taking a UK job or running a UK business.

Official requirements & application ↗
  1. 01

Use GOV.UK to check whether your nationality needs a visa or ETA, and whether your actual purpose fits the permitted visitor activities.

  2. 02

If visiting, keep evidence of your genuine travel purpose, overseas employment, sufficient funds and plans to leave. Do not assume paying tax abroad makes all UK work permitted.

  3. 03

If the main purpose is work or a longer residence, identify an eligible work or residence route before booking the stay and obtain advice on your exact work arrangement.

Checked 3 Nov 2026. Eligibility depends on nationality, residence and work arrangements. Check the competent authority before applying; permission to enter, work and become tax resident are separate questions.

CLOSE THE LAPTOP

Make room for the place itself.

South Bank

Walk a stretch of the Thames after work, choosing one cultural stop rather than rushing the entire river.

Make a nearby park part of your daily routine; London rewards staying local.

06 / THE THINGS THAT MAKE A WEEK WORK

Settle in. Keep the good bits.

Stay connected

Compare UK prepaid or eSIM plans and confirm tethering. In a shared house, ask about upload speed, evening congestion and a genuinely private place for calls.

Connectivity toolkit ↗

Eat like you live here

Food halls are useful introductions, but groceries, weekday lunch menus and neighbourhood cafés usually make a more repeatable budget than eating at attractions.

For allergies, carry a translated dietary card and ask about ingredients and cross-contact.

Pick your season

Spring and autumn suit exploring on foot. Winter brings shorter daylight hours; summer travel and events can put pressure on accommodation.

Build your backup

Confirm medical cover for the work and activities you plan. Save local emergency contacts, a nearby clinic and a backup desk before your first working day.

How the nomad ratings work

DNL editorial assessments, not visitor averages or Jake’s personal reviews. Each category uses a 1–5 scale (limited to strong): work setup considers the sourced workspace options; getting around considers the usefulness of transit and walking; everyday value considers the researched cost context; days off considers the range of things to explore. The overall score is the equally weighted mean, rounded to one decimal. These are subjective starting points, not measured Wi-Fi, safety or visa scores.
