NETHERLANDS / THE DNL CITY GUIDE

Amsterdam.

Canals, neighbourhood cafés and a useful transit network make it easy to build a local routine. Accommodation is the big planning decision: compare the exact address, registration needs and commute.

Build your own stay budget +

Start with the reference prices, then change the assumptions to match your trip. Inputs are in EUR; totals use your display currency.

Room starts at long-let rent ÷ 30 + a 35% DNL short-stay allowance, not a researched hotel rate. Replace it with your quote. Travel starts with the reported pass, or 44 single trips where no pass is available. Add a realistic desk and extras allowance to complete the model.

What about a night out?

One mid-range dinner share + two local draught beers comes to about £45.09. This is a calculated example, not a nightlife average; add taxis, club entry and premium drinks separately.

Transport information ↗

Schiphol by train

Schiphol’s station is below the terminal. Check the destination station for your neighbourhood; an airport rail journey is not automatically included in a basic GVB city ticket.

Tram, metro and walking

GVB trams, buses and metro cover daily city trips. A compact home-to-desk route is often easier than crossing the city every day.

Check in and out

OVpay allows supported contactless payment; use the same card or device to check in and out. Confirm whether a visitor product includes NS airport rail as well as GVB.

Respect the bike lanes

Walking is easy in many central neighbourhoods, but watch for bicycles. Rent a bike only when comfortable with traffic rules, secure parking and the route.

ROUTE TO INVESTIGATE

Self-employed residence route / existing EU or work rights

The Netherlands has a self-employed residence route with business, income and economic-interest requirements. It is not a general visa for anyone with a remote job.

EU/EEA/Swiss rights and nationality-specific treaties can change the route. Short-stay Schengen entry alone should not be treated as a work permit.

Official requirements & application ↗
  1. 01

Check your nationality and existing rights with IND, including whether a residence permit and an MVV are needed.

  2. 02

For the self-employed route, review the business plan, income, registration and economic-interest criteria. A foreign remote salary alone does not establish eligibility.

  3. 03

Use IND’s application instructions and document checklist for your circumstances. Check registration, insurance and tax steps separately after approval.

Checked 3 Nov 2026. Eligibility depends on nationality, residence and work arrangements. Check the competent authority before applying; permission to enter, work and become tax resident are separate questions.

CLOSE THE LAPTOP

Make room for the place itself.

North of the IJ

Try a ferry-linked neighbourhood outing and check the route back before a late evening.

Ideas to explore, not bookable tours. Use the destination source and current local information to check access and conditions.

06 / THE THINGS THAT MAKE A WEEK WORK

Settle in. Keep the good bits.

Stay connected

Dutch prepaid and EU roaming options differ by provider and residency. Confirm hotspot use and fair-use limits; ask whether accommodation offers a proper desk rather than only a dining stool.

Connectivity toolkit ↗

Eat like you live here

Foodhallen works for a social meal; supermarkets and neighbourhood cafés make a more repeatable weekly routine. Check whether a café welcomes laptops during busy meal periods.

For allergies, carry a translated dietary card and ask about ingredients and cross-contact.

Pick your season

Spring and summer draw heavy demand. Autumn and winter can be wet and windy; plan a warm indoor workspace and lights if you intend to cycle.

Build your backup

Confirm medical cover for the work and activities you plan. Save local emergency contacts, a nearby clinic and a backup desk before your first working day.

How the nomad ratings work

DNL editorial assessments, not visitor averages or Jake’s personal reviews. Each category uses a 1–5 scale (limited to strong): work setup considers the sourced workspace options; getting around considers the usefulness of transit and walking; everyday value considers the researched cost context; days off considers the range of things to explore. The overall score is the equally weighted mean, rounded to one decimal. These are subjective starting points, not measured Wi-Fi, safety or visa scores.
